Somalia, 25 December 2025 The North East State of Somalia has welcomed the Banadir Region council elections, describing it as a historic milestone in Somalia's democratic process.
The direct elections took place today, with hundreds of residents turning out to vote.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the North East State administration expressed its full support for the exercise, emphasizing the importance of allowing the Somali people the opportunity to choose their representatives.
"The North East State Government fully welcomes the implementation of local government elections in the Banaadir region, which is a crucial step in strengthening democracy, good governance, and public participation in leadership," the statement added.

The administration also affirmed its readiness for one-person, one-vote elections in its own territories, highlighting that this will be vital for democracy and modern governance.
"The North East State Government confirms its full preparedness to participate in the implementation of one-person, one-vote elections, which are a key pillar of democracy and modern governance," the statement concluded.
According to the Electoral Commission, North East State and other regional administrations are also expected to hold one-person, one-vote elections next year.
