Las’anod (Dawan Africa) – The Parliament of North East Somalia today approved the official procedures for the upcoming election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The session, chaired by Interim Speaker Mahmoud Salad Warsame, was attended by 74 lawmakers out of the 83-member assembly. The Election Committee presented the draft procedures to the House, after which MPs engaged in a clause-by-clause debate. The final document was passed through a show-of-hands vote, with 58 in favor, 16 abstaining, and none opposing.
According to the adopted procedures, the registration of Speaker candidates will open on 20 August 2025 and remain open for two days. The campaign period will then take place between 22 and 23 August 2025, with the election of the Speaker scheduled for 24 August 2025 at the parliamentary headquarters in Las’anod.
The approval of the election framework marks a key step in consolidating the Northeastern Somalia state assembly as it moves toward selecting its first permanent leadership.
