MOGADISHU (Dawan Africa) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which opens on September 9, 2025, at the UN Headquarters in New York, according to sources who spoke to Dawan Africa.
While the Assembly formally opens on September 9, the High-Level General Debate — the centrepiece where world leaders deliver their national statements — will begin on September 23. President Hassan is scheduled to address the debate, marking his second participation at the UNGA since returning to office in May 2022.
This year’s Assembly carries the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.” The session comes at a pivotal moment to renew global commitment to multilateralism, solidarity, and collective action. World leaders are expected to emphasize the urgency of delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reinvigorating international cooperation.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the United Nations. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion on the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN Charter. Each of the 193 Member States has an equal vote.
The United Nations itself was founded in 1945, in the aftermath of the Second World War. Today it brings together 193 Member States, guided by the purposes and principles of its founding Charter, with the mission of promoting peace, development, and human rights worldwide.
