Somalia, 11 January 2026 Somalia’s Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali (Hosh) met with Jing Song, the new head of the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) in Somalia on Sunday to discuss strengthening the registration and protection of individuals displaced by conflict and climate shocks.
"The meeting focused on addressing the pressing concerns of internally displaced persons and refugees, as well as enhancing joint efforts to tackle statelessness," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Somalia is grappling with one of the world's most complex displacement crises. Decades of instability and recurring droughts have forced millions from their homes, many of whom lack the legal documentation required to access basic state services or formal employment.

The ministry said both sides agreed to enhance cooperation on civil registration, a move seen as critical for the inclusion of vulnerable communities in Somalia’s national development plans.
The discussion also covered protection and the need for sustainable outcomes for those living in temporary settlements across the country.
The ministry added that both parties reaffirmed their commitment to work closely in support of Somalia’s national priorities to improve the lives of displaced and vulnerable populations.
