Somalia, 1 January 2026 Somaliland politicians in Mogadishu have called on the Federal Government of Somalia to avoid taking any punitive actions that would affect the economy, movement and security of Somaliland residents following Israel's recognition of the self-declared region.
In a joint statement issued today, they stated that such actions would not benefit national unity but instead worsen the already bad situation.
“The Federal Government of Somalia must refrain from taking measures that affect the economy, movement, and security of the Somali people in Somaliland, as forceful actions will never bring about unity,” the statement said.

They stressed that the existing differences should be resolved through peaceful negotiations, cautioning against the use of force or economic pressure.
Additionally, the politicians urged Somaliland to return to the negotiation table to find a lasting resolution to the existing conflicts, emphasizing the importance of peace, stability, and national unity for the Somali people.
