Somalia, 1 January 2026 Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamsa Abdi Barre, has warned that a major security crisis could erupt in the Horn of Africa if other countries follow Israel in recognizing Somaliland as an independent state.
In a speech delivered at the Heritage Forum, in Galmudug, Barre cautioned regional governments that may attempt to violate Somalia’s sovereignty, following Israel’s action.
He stated that such a move could trigger an unprecedented crisis in the region, cautioning that stability of the Horn of Africa, which is already facing challenges, should not be further jeopardized.

"Countries that may be planing to follow Israel’s actions and violate Somalia’s sovereignty should be warned not to bring this region into chaos and uncontrollable fires," he said. "We want peace and coexistence in the Horn of Africa, a region that is already volatile, and we do not want to further fuel the problem."
The Prime Minister's remarks represent a strong stance aimed at preventing an escalation of political tensions in the region, with Somalia consistently advocating for peace and stability.
Israel's action has been strongly condemned by allies of Somalia and key regional and international bodies.
