Cairo, 25 December 2025 The Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Mohamed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, has welcomed the holding of direct municipal elections in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, describing the move as a pivotal step in building state institutions, strengthening democracy and citizenship, and expanding popular participation.
In a statement published on the Arab Parliament’s official Facebook page, Al Yamahi said the elections are the first of their kind since 1969 and represent an important political development reflecting the progress Somalia has made toward consolidating good governance and involving citizens in public affairs.

He noted that the elections are expected to have positive domestic implications, particularly in supporting Somalia’s efforts to achieve security and stability. Al Yamahi stressed the importance of unity among all political forces, prioritizing the national interest, and adopting dialogue as the primary means of resolving political differences.
Al Yamahi also reaffirmed the Arab Parliament’s full support for all efforts aimed at enhancing security and stability in Somalia, in line with the aspirations of the Somali people for development, progress, and prosperity.
