Somalia, 27 December 2025 A cross-regional group of countries on Friday issued a joint statement strongly rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland region of the Federal Republic of Somalia, warning that the move poses serious risks to regional and international peace and security.
In the statement, the foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Türkiye, and Yemen, along with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, underscored their “unequivocal rejection” of the recognition announced on 26 December.
The ministers said the move constitutes an unprecedented measure with “serious repercussions” for peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, and warned it could negatively affect international peace and security at large. They described the decision as a blatant disregard for international law.
The statement condemned Israel’s action, stressing that it represents a grave violation of the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, which obliges states to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The group reaffirmed its full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, rejecting any measures that undermine the country’s territorial integrity or authority over its entire territory. It further warned that recognizing parts of states sets a dangerous precedent that threatens international peace and security.
The ministers also rejected any attempt to link the recognition to efforts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people, stressing that such actions are categorically unacceptable under any circumstances.
This statement comes amid widespread condemnation of Israel’s move, not only from Arab and Islamic countries, but also from the European Union, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, all of which have warned that the decision could undermine stability in the Horn of Africa and weaken the international system based on respect for state sovereignty.
