Somalia, 27 December, 2025 Former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has shared his reaction to the historic recognition of Somaliland by Israel, describing the moment he learned the news and calling for unity within his country.
In a short video, Bihi recalled receiving a call from the current president Abdirrahman Irro while working on his farm. "While I was working on my farm, the president called me and told me that the recognition was ready, so I should come. After that, I ran over without even wearing shoes," he said.
Bihi expressed hope that the recognition would not lead to internal divisions. "I hope this does not create tension between us. Many of our people are filled with emotions, and some may even take sides, so there is a need for extensive awareness and understanding to be fostered," he added.
As Somaliland celebrates its recognition by Israel, Bihi’s comments underscore the complex emotions surrounding the issue and the challenges the country faces in managing potential frictions and maintaining unity and securing broader international recognition.

During his term, in January 2024, Bihi took a controversial step by signing a memorandum of understanding with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, offering port access and a naval base in exchange for Ethiopia’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state—an initiative that ultimately did not succeed.
The failure of this initiative highlighted the persistent challenges Somaliland faces in securing international recognition, despite later attempts to court external actors such as Israel.
These moves were met with strong condemnation from the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League, IGAD, the Gulf Cooperation Council, and several countries in the region, underscoring the limits imposed by regional politics and the complex balance of power in the Horn of Africa.
