Djibouti, 24 January 2026 Djibouti’s Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Livestock has launched a development program in Dikhil, aimed at strengthening agricultural and livestock production.
The program, known as PGIRE, focuses on enhancing food security, improving livestock health, and increasing agricultural productivity among farming and pastoralist communities living in the country’s interior regions.
Supplies to be distributed to communities include 1,500 vitamin-mineral blocks 3,500 bags of livestock feed, 608 sets of agricultural tools, solar-powered pumps for irrigating agricultural wells, and 1,000 batches of veterinary medicines. The equipment will not be limited to Dikhil but will be distributed across all five regions of the country.
In addition, the government plans to distribute 500 tonnes of maize and 200 tonnes of wheat to benefit more than 4,000 pastoralists nationwide.
Officials said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to address the impacts of climate change and prolonged drought.

The launch ceremony was attended by Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Livestock Mohamed Ahmed Awale, egional authorities, and representatives of farmers’ and pastoralist cooperatives in Dikhil.
Speaking at the event, Minister Awale said the government had learned important lessons from last year’s severe drought and stressed the need for early action and sustained support.
“Drought caused by climate change is not a temporary issue. It is a persistent challenge that requires long-term planning,” the minister said. “That is why we are delivering livestock feed, seeds, irrigation equipment, and solar-powered systems to strengthen community resilience.”
He added that Dikhil was selected as a pilot region, with the program set to expand to Ali Sabieh, Tadjourah, and Arta as part of a nationwide rollout.
Djibouti continues to face recurrent droughts across the Horn of Africa, placing growing pressure on food systems and rural economies. Authorities say programs such as PGIRE combine emergency assistance with sustainable development solutions to support communities in the country’s interior.
