Somalia, 11 November 2025 – A free eye surgery program has been launched in Mogadishu, providing vision-restoring procedures to 400 patients in its first phase.
The program, carried out at Doctor Sumait Hospital, is designed to help citizens regain their sight through cataract and other corrective eye surgeries at no cost.
A ceremony, held on Tuesday, to celebrate its success was attended by hospital officials, medical staff, and patients, as well as representatives from Direct Aid, the Kuwaiti humanitarian organization implementing the initiative.
Ali Farah, Director General of Dr. Sumait Hospital, emphasized the program’s broader goal of improving access to healthcare.
“Our aim is to expand this initiative to other regions and restore vision for as many Somalis as possible,” he said.

Patients screened for the program included those with common vision impairments and more complex eye conditions, according to hospital doctors.
Direct Aid confirmed that a second phase of the program will take place later this year, providing treatment to another 400 patients.
“By the end of the year, we hope to help at least 400 more people regain their sight,” said Hassan Ahmed Badawi, Director of Direct Aid in Somalia.
Somalia is among 32 African countries where the Kuwaiti government supports free eye surgery programs through Direct Aid, aiming to expand access to vision care across the continent.
