Somalia, 30 December 2025 The National Consultative Council of Somalia on Monday held a meeting in the capital, Mogadishu, to discuss key national issues related to the country’s sovereignty, unity, security, and future, amid rapidly evolving political and security developments.
The meeting, chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama, as well as the presidents of the South West, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and North East states as well as the Governor of the Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu.
According to the final communiqué issued after the meeting, the President provided a comprehensive briefing on the federal government’s efforts to safeguard national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the constitutional order, stressing that addressing current challenges requires collective responsibility from state institutions and Somali society as a whole.
The Council reaffirmed Somalia’s firm position on preserving national unity and sovereignty, in line with the Provisional Constitution, international law, and the charters of the African Union and the Arab League.

In this context, the Council strongly condemned what it described as Israel’s provocative and hostile actions—specifically its recognition of the Somaliland region as an independent state—considering the move a direct interference in Somalia’s internal affairs and an attempt to legitimize the secession of part of its territory, in clear violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
On the political front, the Council welcomed the local council elections held in the Banadir Region on 25 December, describing them as a pivotal democratic milestone that reflects Somalia’s progress in consolidating representative governance. It also stressed the importance of completing electoral processes in the remaining federal member states to strengthen political stability and the federal system.
On security matters, the Council commended the Somali National Armed Forces and security agencies for their continued operations against terrorist groups, particularly Al-Shabaab, praising their sacrifices in safeguarding public security and social stability. The Council also welcomed the success of the military operation known as “Silent Storm” in the Lower Shabelle region, which resulted in heavy losses for illegal armed groups.
In its concluding remarks, the Council called on the international community, regional organizations, and Somalia’s partners to fulfill their responsibilities in supporting Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and stability, warning against any actions that could fuel conflict or undermine security. It reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to good-neighborly relations, peaceful coexistence, and the defense of its legitimate national interests.
