Somalia, 28 December 2025 President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has urged Somali citizens, particularly in the northern regions, to remain calm and united in defense of national unity and territorial integrity following Israel's recognition of Somaliland.
“This is not the time for clan-based or regional rivalries,” the President said. “We must unite our strength and wisdom to defend our existence and sovereignty.”
Addressing leaders in Somaliland over Israel’s declaration recognizing the region as an independent sovereign state, the President warned against aligning with foreign agendas that could lead to instability.
“Do not push your people in the wrong direction or lead them toward a dark and uncertain fate,” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s position against Israeli move, the President stressed that Somalia’s stance remains unchanged.
“The position of the Somali government has not changed and will not change,” he added.
More from Somalia
He emphasized that dialogue remains the preferred path forward. “We remain committed to meaningful dialogue with the Somaliland administration to strengthen unity and resolve misunderstandings,” the President stated.
Appealing to historical memory, the President addressed residents of the northern regions directly. “It is not part of your history to invite the enemies of the Somali nation onto your land,” he said.
He warned that the opportunity to reject such actions may not last. “Today you still have the chance to refuse this path, but tomorrow you may no longer have that opportunity,” he cautioned.
Addressing the wider population, the President emphasized that Somalia belongs to its people and that any attempt to divide it will ultimately fail.
He concluded by reiterating the government’s determination to defend Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and internationally recognized borders through lawful and diplomatic means, calling on all Somalis to stand together in the face of external pressure.
“Somalia belongs to Somalis,” he concluded.
