New York, 28 December 2025 The United Nations Security Council is expected to convene an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the political and legal implications of Israel’s announcement recognizing Somaliland as an independent state.
The meeting follows an urgent request submitted by the Government of Somalia, which described Israel’s move as a “deliberate attack” on the country’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
The session is being closely watched, with significant attention on the positions to be taken by Security Council members. Diplomatic sources indicate that many members are likely to issue strong criticism of Israel’s decision, warning that unilateral recognition poses a threat to peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, and sets a dangerous precedent that contravenes international law.

Meanwhile, the General Secretariat of the Arab League announced that it will hold an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives on Sunday to address the developments and to express a clear rejection of any actions that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The Somali government reiterated on Friday its firm commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and national unity, categorically rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and stressing that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of the territory of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
