Somalia, 28 December 2025 The North East State of Somalia has announced plans to hold mass protests opposing Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, according to an official statement issued on Sunday.
The state's Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ahmed Ali Yakhle, issued a formal appeal calling on residents across all regions and districts of North East State to organize large-scale demonstrations in support of the federal government's position against Israel’s move.
The ministry said the protests are scheduled for Monday, December 29, and will take place in public squares.
Minister Yakhle said the demonstrations aim to show firm support for Somalia’s national unity and to reject what he described as illegal decisions intended to divide the territory of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

“I instruct all regional and district governors of the North East State to implement this call, so that the public can peacefully and collectively express their position in defense of Somalia’s unity, cohesion, and brotherhood,” the minister said.
The Federal Government of Somalia has rejected Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing it as an illegal step that violates the United Nations Charter and constitutes direct interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.
The call for protests by the North East State comes amid growing domestic and international reactions following Israel’s announcement recognizing Somaliland—a move the Federal Government of Somalia has described as unlawful and a threat to regional stability.
