Somalia, 31 December 2025 The Turkish-owned offshore vessel Çağrı Bey is expected to begin operations in Somalia’s territorial waters next year, a move widely seen as further strengthening the existing strategic partnership between Somalia and Türkiye in the energy sector.
Çağrı Bey will operate in Somali waters where seismic surveys have already been conducted, indicating the potential presence of oil and gas resources that remain untapped.
The vessel is named after Çağrı Bey bin Mika’il, one of the founders of the Seljuk State and a prominent historical Turkish leader. Many of Türkiye’s strategic vessels are traditionally named after national historical figures.
Çağrı Bey is among the most advanced offshore drilling vessels in the world. Its key technical features include the capacity to carry 1,250 tons of drilling equipment, the ability to drill to depths of up to 12,000 meters below the seabed, and its construction year of 2024.

The drilling mission of Çağrı Bey follows extensive seismic research conducted by Türkiye’s seismic survey vessel Oruç Reis, which carried out surveys over an area of 4,465 square kilometers in Somali waters for a period of nine months.
According to current plans, oil production activities by Çağrı Bey are expected to commence in 2026, following the completion of all technical and security preparations.
Çağrı Bey is not merely a drilling vessel; it represents a new chapter in Somalia–Türkiye cooperation and a renewed hope for Somalia’s long-term energy future.
